Education Manager Job Description

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our global technical team as an Education Manager (EM). The PEAS technical team is a small group of experts who work to continually strengthen PEAS’ impact across our network of schools and beyond. Our workstreams span technical advice and quality assurance to our in-country programmes; developing partnerships with governments and strategic donors; and advocacy work to expand PEAS’ impact to other actors and wider education systems.

Responsibilities of the role:

The proportion of time spent by the EM on the areas below will depend on the experience and interests of the successful candidate.

1. Support to PEAS’ Ugandan and Zambian Education/Programmes teams

  • Contribute to the design of new education projects by providing technical input based on an understanding of the evidence of what works
  • Support the implementation of education project/programmes by providing on-going  technical expertise and help with problem-solving  

2. Public-private partnership (PPP) development

  • Support the strengthening of PEAS’ existing partnerships with Ministries of Education by providing technical assistance to in-country government relations leads 
  • Keep abreast of emerging best-practice in the field and providing regular updates to the technical team

3. Thought leadership

  • Contribute to the development of a global advocacy and influence strategy to build PEAS’ profile as a thought leader within the sector
  • Help deliver aspects of this strategy (e.g. publishing, networking and presenting at key conferences)
  • Support the technical team with high quality briefings and written materials

4. Partnership development and fundraising

  • Support the PEAS fundraising team by providing technical input to funding applications and reports
  • Support the technical team in establishing new strategic partnerships by researching potential funding opportunities; preparing briefs for meetings with strategic partners; and developing new funding proposals 
  • Help steward existing partnerships, including reporting

5. General support to technical team                                                                                                                                   

  • Ensure that the technical team is kept abreast of the latest evidence and thinking in the sector by providing regular updates on new developments to the technical team 
  • Support the technical team by conducting research to inform programme design, proposal development, and reporting
  • Support team with projects on an emerging, needs basis

Location: Based in Central London with approximately 15% travel internationally

Person Specification:

Essential skills, knowledge & experience  

  • A 2:1 or 1st Class Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrable professional and/or academic expertise in at least two of the following areas: teaching, learning, educational assessment, teacher training, school leadership, curriculum development, ed-tech, literacy and numeracy, school improvement, school network management, public-private partnerships (PPPs)
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in education or international development
  • Experience working in developing country contexts, ideally in sub-Saharan Africa  
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent IT skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 8 weeks per year
  • Ability to work under own initiative or in a team to complete complex projects
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • Quick learner and adept at working flexibly to support evolving team and organisational needs.
  • Passion for securing the best education outcomes for children

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • Qualified teacher status and proven record of outstanding classroom practice
  • Master's in education, international development or a related field, and/or PGCE/Education qualification
  • Experience working with staff in multiple locations and maintaining effective communications
  • Experience designing or delivering grant-funded projects for bilateral donors (e.g. DfID, USAID)
  • Project Management skills
