'Kuc Ki Gen' is Acholi for 'Peace with hope' - an apt name for a school in an area that until three years ago was ravaged by Joseph Kony and his 'Lord's Resistance Army'. The education statistics in this war-affected region are striking.
Statistics show at the district level, there are 184 primary schools but just 22 secondary schools. PEAS is providing a high quality secondary school to help those who previously had nowhere to go, or had to travel many miles daily to attend a low quality government school. Padibe is a poor area - Ugandan Government funding means all day school places are free and even the poorest students can attend.
The school's name includes Acholi words, the language spoken by locals. 'Kuc Ki Gen' means 'peace with hope', which is exactly what we hope the school will give the children that attend it.
The school's building was kindly funded by the Waterloo Foundation, the COINS Foundation and a large number of individual PEAS supporters who responded to our appeal in May 2010 for funds. Thank you to everybody who contributed make this school happen.
