Kiira View Secondary School

Butagaya, Jinja District, Uganda
Opened in 2009
Students (March 2012): 464, Director: Richard Obbo, Headteacher: Richard Ayaga

Kiira View Secondary School opened in February 2009 in a rural area of Jinja district in eastern Uganda, serving the community of Butagaya, about 30 km from the city of Jinja.

The school has made enormous efforts to provide a welcoming and attractive environment for study, with beautiful gardens where students can study or relax when they are not in lessons. A pupil at the school, Colin, reports that the buildings are among his favourite things in the school.

The site for the school overlooks the river Nile, near it's source Lake Victoria. 'Kiira' is the name of the river in the local language.

The school opened with classrooms, a library and laboratory, an administration block, a dormitory and sanitary facilities. The school is currently building a new dormitory but needs extra funds for more sanitary facilities, which are currently quite basic. This school has been developed as a result of our exciting partnership with the COINS foundation. Since 2010 it has been linked with Pimlico Academy in Westminster, London.

Did you know?

After one year, PEAS schools are financially sustainable through low fees and goverment subsidy. They do not depend on UK-fundraising to cover running costs, and they are thus able to run independently and indefinitely.
