Green Shoots Secondary School opened on 2nd February 2010 with 384 students, a record number. The school was officially opened by Local Council Chairman V George Bagonza and soon after this we had to build another four classroom block to cope with demand.
The school is situated in the west of Uganda in the district of Hoima, near Lake Albert and serves the town of Kigorobya and the surrounding community. It is situated in an area where there are hundreds more primary school leavers than secondary school places, which is why it was overwhelmed with applications!
The name Green Shoots symbolises the hope and growth that a PEAS school brings to an area.
Like all our schools, Green Shoots will grow to support a student population of over 1000. Out of the current 632 students, a fantastic 58% are girls. The school also currently employs 20 local people as teachers or support staff.
The school is led by local Director of Finance and Development, Deo Karakaba and Deputy Director of Education, Simon Okwera. A range of subjects at O-level and A-level will be taught, making the school the first provider of HSC education in Kigorobya.
PEAS is very grateful to Ian and Jill Drew, The Derek and Julia Breed Foundation, Alex Letts and Tullow Oil, who are the principal funders of Green Shoots.
