St. Janan Luwum Secondary School

A model for success

St. Janan Luwum Secondary School (right) is the first school that has been funded by PEAS.

Situated in a slum area, near Kabalagala, in Kampala,  the school is a source of hope for the desperately poor community in which it sits.

Since it opened in 2003, the school has grown rapidly with excess fee revenues being used to help the school expand and develop. After just four years, the school now supports a student population of nearly 1000 and is now operating independently.

All of these pupils are benefiting from the exceptionally low fees required by the school and many of the poorest are supported further through a bursary programme. The school employs over 50 local members of staff.

Since funding St. Janan's PEAS has opened two new schools in other parts of Uganda. Read about our most recent projects in Buloba and Kikandwa.

 Recent Developments

New building project
In February 2007 work began on the construction of a new classroom block. In addition to providing much needed extra classroom space the building houses a new science laboratory on the ground floor and the boys' boarding facilities on the first floor.

In the future, the school plans to add a third floor to house a new library and computer room.

Kitchen Improvements
Thanks to excess money generated by the school and some external donations, work was recently completed on the school's facilities for preparing meals.

As well as general kitchen improvements, the school plans to construct an outside shelter for staff and students to use during meal times and as extra study space during the day.
